Drew Barrymore Flower Beauty Balm BB Cream|Not Just Another Glorified Tinted Moisturizer

It doesn't take a beauty fanatic to notice the recent influx of BB creams on the market. Walk into your local drugstores, randomly select a beauty brand, chances are you'll find some items labeled with the term BB Cream. However, most of them are not the BB cream that you expect (or at least for some of us).

I'm a huge fan of BB creams and have been using them for the past few years. The upsetting reality is that most BB creams from Western brands are not really BB creams, which are suppose to provide flawless but natural skin finish. Personally, they seem more like glorified tinted moisturizers. I'm not saying that they are all horrible products, but a few brands sure look like that they just repackaged their regular tinted moisturizers because all their competitors are marketing BB creams.

Just when I'm about to lose faith in finding a BB cream that works for my skin, I spotted the Beauty Balm BB Cream from the newly launched Flower Cosmetics created by the lovely Drew Barrymore.

I'm not quite fond of the packaging of this monster collection of 181 pieces, but my exception is the tube packaging for its BB Cream, which is sleek and simple.

The sealed packaging assures that no one has tempered with your product.

The squeeze tube is very sanitary and extremely easy to control.

It has a medium and smooth texture, which makes applying it a piece of cake. The BB cream gives an unnaturally smooth and almost silicone sensation, which usually means an immediate red flag. A quick peek at the ingredient list reveals Dimethicone. I'm happy to report that so far, I haven't broke out from this yet, which isn't the usual case for my face when it encounters silicone based products.

Sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, the Flower Beauty Balm BB Cream comes in 4 shades. Shade 2 is a pretty good match for my NC20/25 skin.

WARNING!!! Bare face attack below!

Now, this is what I call a true BB cream. It applies onto the skin smoothly, offers light to medium coverage and doesn't feel heavy or cakey. Unlike most BB creams, this is not very moisturizing, so laying a good lotion or moisturizer underneath is a must. As you can see from the image above, it covers most of my imperfections and large pores but still allows my real skin to show through a bit. In person, the semi-dewy finish is extremely natural and lovely. I can finally pretend that I have naturally healthy and glowing skin.

After 4 hours of running around and without any touch up, the BB cream still sits pretty good on my face. Because I used flash to take this picture, it does seem more shiny. In person and with natural lighting, you can barely see any shine on my skin, which is pretty awesome considering that most foundations either melt away or turn me into a disco ball due to my extremely oily skin.

After a long 9 hours and not one single touch up, I'm pretty amazed at the performance of this BB cream. By the end of the day, I can see some dry flakes as well as minor imperfections, but overall, my makeup still looks quite decent. Again as I've mentioned, this BB cream runs on the dry side, so this is probably not a great choice for those with dry or sensitive skin. But for oily girls like myself, this may just be the lifesaver.

As much as I love this BB cream, there's one thing that bothers me. Wal-Mart.com clearly states that this product is paraben free. However, the ingredient list shows multiple parabens. I hope this is nothing more than a typo on the site and not false advertising.

Overall, I'll have to sign off on a great report card for this product because it delivers outstanding and long lasting result.

It lasts on my oily skin for an entire day without any touch up or setting powder. That is rare. It provides just enough coverage to conceal all imperfections but still creates a natural and smooth finish. Composing a soft glow for my skin, this BB cream keeps my shine at bay from morning to night. At $12.98 a tube, this is an excellent base makeup that is quite comparable to my beloved Asian BB creams.

What are your thoughts on BB creams? Love them? Hate them? Do you see differences between Asian and Western brand BB creams? Have you heard of this new line created by Drew Barrymore? Would you be purchasing anything from this new collection? Share your answers in the comments.

    1. Karen, this BB cream claims that it can last up to 12 hours. I don't wear my makeups for that long, but I can imagine that it's not too hard for this product.

  4. I think this might actually be one of the better western brand bb creams. I like the color a lot, not pink or too fair!

    1. Sharlynn, same feeling here. This is definitely a great BB cream compared to other ones from Western brands. The color (shade 2) is quite suitable for most Asian skin tones.

  5. I actually researched and compiled a post of BB creams not too long ago. In Australia, we have about 19 BB Creams, I'm sure America has more! I haven't tried Asian BB Creams but like you, many has said that Western BB creams are like glorified tinted moisturisers which I do believe.. because some BB Creams (ahem Garnier) are exactly like tinted moisturisers! I don't see any difference so... meep.

This BB Cream looks real nice despite its.. meh packaging! I'd give it a try if they were available in Australia (without a hefty price tag). I have heard about Drew Barrymore's launch of new cosmetics line though! She's been a COVERGIRL for quite a while now... time for her own launch! Wonder if it'll be available here in Australia!

Great post Angela! SO glad I found your blog!! Keep us updated on any other products from Flower Beauty okay?! XX

    1. Tram, I have to urge you to try out a few Asian BB Creams because they are truly amazing. And most fit Asian skin tone quite well. There is certainly nothing wrong with a tinted moisturiser but for some brands, I have a feeling that they label their products BB Cream not because they are actually BB Creams but simply for profit and marketing purposes, which to me is not right. For these big corporations, they can simply just invest a little bit of money and actually come up with real BB Creams.

I don't know when Flower (if ever) will be available in Australia since even in the U.S., the brand is only available at Wal-Mart. But I'm sure soon you can find these at online retailers that ship internationally.

And I have to agree that with her years of experience being a COVERGIRL, I'd say she has great knowledge to create an exceptional beauty line, which so far seems pretty good to me.

I'm glad you found my blog and I do have more reviews on this new Flower collection coming soon.

  9. I'm really excited about Flower Beauty (although I really wish it weren't only sold at Walmart). It's definitely refreshing to hear of a product claiming to be a BB Cream that really is. I'll definitely look into this

    1. Catherine, I wish the same that Flower isn't only sold at Wal-Mart. Hopefully after seeing a positive response, the brand will consider to have the line carried at other retailers as well.

  11. How is it possible that I was going to say some of the same exact things on this product..??? It must be an oily skin thing. Great review!!

    1. Tammy, it's definitely an oily skin thing. I don't think other skin types understand the trouble we go through to find products that at least last a bit before turning into a disco ball on our face.

  12. BB cream is still a puzzling phenomenon for me. While I have found BB creams that work well for me (Dior HydraLife, Omorovicza), it just seems like something that's between a tinted moisturizer and foundation. Maybe I haven't used any of them long enough to actually experience the skincare benefits?

Glad to hear you like this one! It does look very naturally dewy on!

    1. Sunny, I never have any expectations on the claimed skincare benefits. I get quite shocked when some people mentions that they use bb creams as skincare products.

  14. Can I get this in the US?! I really hope so! I love how you made the GIF to show the texture! I'm amazed with it even after 9 hours! Yikes, I really hope that was just a typo, you could always leave a review talking about great it is, but how there are indeed parabens just to let people know and then maybe Walmart will fix their "mistake" !

  17. Thank you for your review! I do love Drew Barrymore because she's always so honest and involved, so I figured her cosmetics line was just as such! I have mad, oily skin! I just bought earlier today GARNIER's BB CREAM..... Horrible. I will say this, I heard about It through a co worker so I tried it, her skin though is never oily and we run around in a restaurant all night! So to be fair, her skin looks great, mine? Well you can fry some eggs on a sunny day! Just Aweful. I'm returning it in the morning. Hence why I'm so glad you posted a review and we have similar skin! Thank you again!

    1. Marta, I haven't tried out the Garnier BB Cream, but I've heard horrible things about it. Actually, I almost picked it up the other day but the sales associate at the store told me not to. She said it's really terrible for oily skin. I'm glad you find this review useful. Definitely give this BB Cream a try.

  18. This is a great review! My daughter in law just texted me from Walmart if I knew about it. I knew of the line but not the BB cream and after reading this review I am going to force myself into Walmart (hate the store!) to pick this up as it sounds exactly what I've been looking for.

  19. Oh I'm excited about this! The only BB creams I've tried have left me normal-to-oily skin too oily, this one sounds like a winner and the coverage seems pretty good, too! Yay! Thanks for the review and suggestion!

  20. Kristen, I do notice that some BB Creams leave the skin a tiny bit oilier than normal foundations. However, this one certainly doesn't. I have quite oily oily, but this seems to alleviate that problem a lot. I would highly recommend it.

  21. Does anyone know if the BB shades line up to the foundation shades? The lightest foundation (LF1) shade is a match for me, but I wasn't sure if the lightest BB cream shade would match. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't have the foundation, and I don't think the BB cream shades line up with the foundation shades, since there are only 4 BB cream shades but more than 10 shades for the foundation. However, from seeing swatches and images online and from blogs, the 2 shades do look quite similar.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for letting me know! They were out of the lightest BB so I couldn't see it in person. BTW the foundation is great--lets enough of your own skin to show through to look natural, yet still evens out skin tone.

  24. You are very welcome :) It looks like this new Flower collection is quite a hit with lots of people, so I would assume that they'll want to restock the products and at least continue selling them for a while. I think Wal-Mart should have that shade back soon. And now I definitely want to check out that foundation.
